Essete Workineh
UCM Youth Leader - June 2022 National Leadership Training Attendee
“I was fortunate enough to attend the Gamaliel National Leadership Training in Mundelein, Illinois. I was expecting to attend just another leadership training that enhanced my skills of being a leader. But NLT was more than that. This seven-day agitational experience gave me a deeper sense of myself. The Socratic style of this training made me look deeper into my past and how previous events in my life have come to affect my leadership abilities today. Not only was I able to reflect on who I am, but I also got to uncover my self-interest. While recalling wounds from my K-12 education, and the unbearable hardships I faced, I uncovered my desire to change the way schools approach cultural awareness.
When I was in middle and high school, I faced a lot of racism and xenophobia, being a Black, African woman in a predominately white space. I excused a lot of this behavior because I was conditioned to believe it was normal. After attending the week long, I realized the suppression of my anecdotes had prevented me from leading to my fullest capacity. While I continue to share my story, my ambition becomes more clear. I am continuing my work to fulfill my self-interest with NCCJ St. Louis, the non-profit organization I currently work for.”

UCM Summer Intern - June 2022 National Leadership Training Attendee

"When I was told about NLT, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I assumed it had something to do with leadership training, but I could not have anticipated the rigor and intensity the week would bring. It certainly was an experience! And where the training did have elements that didn't entirely work for me, I can see how the trainers were willing to put in a great deal of effort to help get us clearer on our self-interest, so that through it, we are able to have a better way forward on our path to power.
This week helped get me clearer why and how I want to become an Air Force chaplain, and for that I am grateful. This is a training I think all seminarians would benefit from going through, for the work we do is so spiritually-based, there is an added imperative for us to be genuinely clear on the "why" of what we hope to build; our beloved community."
