Meet the Team: Kayla Branigan

As an Organizer with UCM, Kayla brings lived experience, academic expertise, and a deep commitment to justice to her work. She has dedicated her career to challenging systemic barriers and creating opportunities for marginalized communities through immigration advocacy, voter engagement, and policy work. With degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia and Johns Hopkins University, and currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration, she continues to turn her passion for equity into meaningful, community-driven change.

What inspired you to join UCM?:

Being a Black woman from a underserved, impoverished community the cards have often be stacked against me and many others like me. Rather than allowing myself to be confined to “the path” society has envisioned for individuals such as myself I decided to stand up and become a voice. I have worked tirelessly alongside elected officials, various non-profit organizations, creating resources that would have helped the younger me. Working on alongside UCM has allowed me a chance to continue on the journey of creating a new normal for marginalized communities and being a voice for those that remain silenced.

What previous experience prepared you for this role?:

From immigration and refugee assistance work, to voter engagement and constituent services. My commitment to bettering my community is not limited to one area of focus, but extended to fulfilling a mission and creating a new normal for many marginalized communities.

Are there any certifications, degrees, or specialized training you’d like to highlight?:

I have earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in Political Science, a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in Political Communication, and I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Administration.

Can you share a fun fact or surprising detail about yourself?:

I have been fortunate to assist with the creation of various bills and ordinances within a major state alongside several elected officials.

Do you have a favorite quote, motto, or saying that reflects your outlook or approach to life?:

“The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams”
