Dear Democracy…Let’s Talk

On February 27th, students and community members gathered at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) for an evening centered around one simple but powerful idea: conversation that matters. The event, Dear Democracy… Let’s Talk, created a space for students to openly discuss politics, democracy, and the issues shaping their lives today.

The inspiration behind the event came from a desire to create a space where the younger population felt heard and valued. During such an important moment in our political climate, many young people have strong opinions, frustrations, and questions, but not always a place where they feel comfortable expressing them. This event was meant to change that by encouraging honest dialogue, respectful disagreement, and thoughtful reflection.

We started the evening with lighthearted introductions, where students identified their role in said conversations, boundaries and ground rules. It was a way to ensure the space would be free from judgement and to recognize that everyone engages with politics differently.

From there, the conversations became deeper. Students explored topics like whether voting truly creates change, whether the major political parties have failed young people, and how social media impacts democracy. Some discussions were held in a panel-style format, while others invited the entire audience to participate or break into small groups. The goal wasn’t to win debates but to listen, reflect, and learn from one another’s perspectives.

By the end of the evening, the focus shifted from discussion to action. Students shared ideas for how they can stay engaged, create more spaces for dialogue on campus, and bring more young voices into civic conversations. They mentioned collaborating with other student organizations on campus to host events and being inclusive of other organizations and students on campus for diverse dialogue.

One of the biggest takeaways from the event was clear: students want more opportunities like this. Conversations about democracy, community, and civic responsibility don’t end after one evening.

Dear Democracy… Let’s Talk was just the beginning. We hope to continue creating spaces like this where young people can come together, speak honestly, challenge ideas, and stay engaged in shaping the communities and democracy they are inheriting.

Because the conversation about democracy should never stop. If you are interested in joining the Dear Democracy Conversations, we’d love to have you.
